The metals used for shears are identified by a set of boring letters and numbers, like 440C. 440C is popular type of metal that has been considered top shelf for a long time, and still commonly found in many high end shears today. Sensei discovered that by tweaking the metal formula, they are able to safely increase the hardness. Then by taking an additional step in the foraging process called cryogenic tempering, the structural consistency of the metal can improve at the molecular level. By doing so, edge retention improved by 40%. Sensei renamed this cryogenically tempered 440C steel, Duralite. Hand crafted convex edge start out sharper and hold their edge longer compared to machine beveled blades.
